I’ve recently started on looking for markets where I can publish my short fiction, whether it be short stories or novellas. I’m of a mind to self-publish them in the end but I’d prefer to get published through online magazines and stuff nevertheless at first. It is rather tricky to submit to online magazines these days as many of the more popular ones (which also happen to have significant readership) also have some really exhaustive guidelines on what they want/don’t want to see. Navigating that maze of tripwires isn’t easy but if we don’t try then we can’t really complain now can we?
Some of the best resources that allow you to find the best fit for your work is through Duotrope and Ralan. These two sites send out regular updates on which publishers/magazines are currently looking for submissions and include all the necessary details and what not. For any aspiring writer, these should be the first stop, period.
Some online publishers that I’m looking to submit my work to this year include Clarkesworld and Strange Horizons. I’m well aware of the conceit in submitting to such big players in the industry but the simple fact of the matter is that they are two of the most popular magazines out there to get published with! Aiming high never hurts. Plus I have a bit of an ego that makes me want to submit to them before anything else. So that’s what I’m going to do, oh yeah.
One online publisher that I’m really keen to submit at least one short story to this year is Stories in the Ether, which I’ve mentioned previously on the blog.
